Wow! What a fantastic Book Week our school celebrated last week. We started with our costume catwalk parade followed by our traditional walk down the Main Street and passed the Kindergarten. I visited each classroom reading one of the shortlisted books followed by an art lesson inspired by the illustrators.

Whilst our Book Fair was running we held an Colouring  in competition and congratulate Catalina Taheny, Evie Warren, Isabelle Hancock and Gabriela Taheny  who won a book of their choice from the Book Fair.

This week for Maths, we have started learning about mass. We began by sorting objects within the classroom into light or heavy. We then spoke about an object being small, but that doesn't always mean it is light in weight, e.g., a rock. We discussed the different ways to measure mass, such as hefting objects using our hands, balance scales, and cooking scales. We discussed that when using balancing scales if the object moves towards the ground, it is considered heavier than the object moving towards the sky. We also discussed that if the balance scales stay in the middle, the objects weigh the same mass. Next week, we will start learning about capacity.

Our school grown veggies make us feel like this!

As you know, we've been using as much of our winter harvest across in the Home Ec program as we possibly can - the 3/4 class made an Indian dish this week with no less than 9 different vegetables and herbs from our garden. Healthy AND delicious crops, grown, harvested and cooked by the students. We are reaping the rewards of good soil prep, regular water and sun, consistent composting and mulching, and showing good care to our patch.

Start thinking ahead for your summer planting at home - now is a good time to plan which summer veggies you will grow, and to prepare your soil - think about weeding, as well as adding manure and organic matter to your soil. September is a good time to pop sunflower seeds in for flowers around Christmas time.

What could this be??! 💭 Inside these files Year 5 students located their Measurement Assignment. Now that we have covered all the concepts in Measurement in our Mathematics lessons it’s time to see what students can recall in a different context. Students (I mean Zoo Keepers!) will be responding to multiple measurement prompts in this file for taking over a Zoo.

This week the Reception class have been learning all about shapes. We have learnt about the features of shapes and how their features help us to tell them apart. We used words to describe each shape such as how many sides and corners they had, as well as what colour and size each shape was.

In Year 1/2 the students have been learning about procedure writing. They have explored many different texts and identified where they see procedures in their life. They completed an activity where students worked together to order procedure samples from least effort to the best. From this activity, the students were able to work with positive expectations and I have been able to see them putting forward their best effort.

The Smart Scribes

I have been working with students from Year 2 on Exposition Writing. These young students will be expected to produce a persuasive piece of writing from March 13th next year in the NAPLAN tests. This is very early in the year, when teachers will have had only a very short time from the start of the school year to get children back into thinking about correct writing.

I have always believed that educating a child is a WHOLE SCHOOL responsibility and so I am doing my small part in helping these students. We have started in our Year Two group, (we have voted to call ourselves the Smart Scribes) by using some descriptive writing techniques, including adjectives, rhetorical questions, and metaphorical language, to describe some delicious cupcakes.

Next, we have moved on to Exposition writing. We are learning that MUSCLE WORDS, like ‘definitely’, ‘certainly’, ‘positively’, are all strong words and make our writing more convincing. We are a work in progress. I will update you as we progress into our lessons.

Regards,

Mandy Thompson
