Senior Primary News

Our year 6/7 students have been working very hard during their Art classes this term. Our watercolour painting classes are designed to teach the fundamentals of watercolour painting, while also exploring the possibilities of using colours for purpose. The class started the term with a refresher on the basics of watercolour painting, followed by the use different brushes and techniques, to help create a variety of effects with different colours.

We have also been learning about the importance of mixing colours, especially primary colours. For this particular piece, we focused on how to use colours for purpose, such as conveying a particular mood or emotion. Poppies are a very recognisable flower and have significant meaning. We tried very hard to show this through our colour choice and detail. We hope you like our artwork.

Literacy Coaching

08 March 2023

This year we are continuing to hold an extension writing group during Spelling Time, at the start of each Tuesday and Wednesday. A group of Year 5 and Year 6/7 students, 7 in number, are currently working with me on those 2 days, then continuing with our set writtentasks for the rest of the week. I did not select the students for this group; rather they selected themselves by being excellent spellers and by completing all levels in our spelling system.

We are presently exploring the ability of writers of fiction, to be able not only to describe characters in their works, but also to demonstrate the ability to ‘talk’ through that character with that personality’s unique style and vocabulary. We are choosing a particular character, defining their traits, and making decisions about how that person uses language.

We are starting with a colourful poster of a scene. Our task is to describe this scene in a factual manner. Then our challenge is to ‘step into character’ and describe that same scene, but through the eyes of our chosen character, using their vocabulary, their impressions and their biases. Authors do this every time they have a character speak.

All of our inspiration comes from novels. The students and I present what we are reading and discuss what good authors do. In this way, we are using great and successful writers as our guide.

Regards,

Mandy Thompson

Garden News

08 March 2023

Autumn is here, and we have been talking about the change of seasons and our climate in the Green Space.

Summer crops have finished, with plentiful harvests of tomatoes, capsicum, potatoes, watermelon, sunflower seeds and herbs - our pumpkins are still growing beautifully ready for a later crop.

We have also been talking about the role insects play in the garden, and why it is important for us to care for, protect and encourage them.

Look at these industrious workers shifting mulch to prepare for winter vegetable beds!
