Hello!
This Friday is the Feast of St Columba. Our School is celebrating this day with some whole school activities that our Year 6/7 class have put together and a whole school Mass. Mass is at 11am in the church and everyone is most welcome to attend.
St Columba was a monk that was born, raised and became a priest in Ireland. At the age of 42 he and 12 companions sailed to Scotland and landed on the island of Iona. Here they built a monastery, and this became their base from which they went out and evangelised Scotland. St Columba is well known for his efforts in converting the Northern Picts as well as handwriting copies of the bible and writing two books both of which have been preserved and can be viewed today. He is one of the Patron saints of Ireland and thus was of great importance to our Irish ancestors here at Yorketown.
Next term sees us engage with our MITIOG (Made In The Image Of God) curriculum. We will be sending out more information about this in the coming weeks.
Have a great week! God Bless,
Miriam Honner

We've been snacking at recess and lunch time on fresh celery sticks, lettuce leaves, baby spinach and mandarins.
Winter vegetables are looking good, watch out at the school gate soon for some produce to take home. Please leave a small donation, this goes towards new seedlings for future crops.

Year 5/6/7: Our final task for the Mi Familia unit was to write a poem about our family. Most of the vocabulary and phrases were from previous tasks so it was a good exercise to recap and test our comprehension.

This term, we are delving into natural phenomena occurring in various locations across the globe. Our current focus is on how tectonic plates cause changes to the Earth’s surface. Last week, we conducted a hands-on experiment utilizing Oreo biscuits to visually represent three different types of plate boundaries: Divergent, Convergent, and Transform plate boundaries. Each boundary type causes unique changes to the Earth’s surface.
The left Oreo biscuit represents a Divergent plate boundary, where plates move away from one another. The white filling depicts the asthenosphere, a soft layer of the mantle. As plates separate, the mantle rises slightly and hardens, leading to alterations to the Earth’s surface.
The middle Oreo biscuit represents a Convergent boundary plate. This occurs when two plates push together, forcing the mantle and crust upwards and eventually leading to the creation of new mountains over time.
Finally, the right Oreo represents a Transform plate boundary, where two plates rub up and down against each other. This movement smooths the edges of the plates, and you can feel it happening. A famous example of a transform plate boundary is the San Andreas fault line in California.
Basketball Carnival
Last Friday I went to Kadina for a basketball carnival. There were only two teams in our division, so we only played one game against Maitland Lutheran. The first half we were winning by about ten points, then they managed to catch up. In the last five minutes, we were sitting on the edge of our seats, but managed to win by three points. I loved this experience because I got to meet new people and play a game I love. Since we won, we get to play in Adelaide in week nine, and I am very excited. Thanks to Suzie for helping me be able to play, even though we aren’t a secondary school. I am very grateful for this experience.

On Wednesday, we participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime 2023 book: The Speedy Sloth by Rebecca Young and Heath McKenzie. We had a special guest, Deidre Taheny, come into the school to read the book to students. They enjoyed getting to meet the first ever librarian at SCMS! We then joined the 1/2 class to create a sloth craft together.
